The best positions for using a hot water bottle

The position in which you use your hot water bottle greatly influences its effectiveness. Here are the best postures depending on the area to be treated.

For the back (lower back)

  • Ideal position: Lying on your back, knees bent, hot water bottle under your lumbar region
  • Alternative: Sitting, hot water bottle wedged between back and backrest
  • Time: 15-20 minutes

For the cervical spine

  • Ideal position: Lying on your back, cervical cushion under the nape of your neck
  • Alternative: Sitting, head tilted slightly forward
  • Tip: Use a suitable ergonomic cushion

For the stomach (menstruation, digestion)

  • Ideal position : Lie on your back or side, in the fetal position
  • Alternative: Sitting, hot water bottle on lower abdomen
  • Bonus: Add a plaid for extra comfort

For the knees

  • Ideal position: Leg extended, hot water bottle wrapped around knee
  • Alternative: Sitting, leg on footrest
  • Tip: Hold with a light elastic band

For the shoulders

  • Ideal position: Sitting comfortably, hot water bottle draped over shoulders
  • Alternative: Lying down, hot water bottle under the affected shoulder

General advice

  • Sit comfortably before placing the hot water bottle
  • Take the opportunity to relax and breathe calmly
  • Avoid falling asleep with the hot water bottle
